FACT CHECK: Has IPOB's Nnamdi Kanu Been Secretly Buried?

Two widely shared pictures purport to show undertakers conveying the supposed corpse of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-exiled leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The two photos bear Biafra flag.

Controversial social media personality, Kemi Olunloyo started the speculation last week, repeatedly claiming Kanu died in Italy.

On April 23, 2020, she shared a photo on her verified Facebook page depicting the 'burial' of Kanu.

That photo has been reshared on Facebook, Twitter and Nairaland and in fact, has been used in some news reports, Allnews observed.

Similar post surfaced on social networking service, Twitter in Nigeria on Monday - a day after Olunloyo again announced Kanu's death.

Allnews' findings

Both images do not support the claim that Kanu is late and was secretly buried.

Allnews discovered that the image put up by Olunloyo on April 23, has been circulating online since at least February 2020.

One Gossip media platform that delivers news about Biafra, Breaking NewsFeed, had posted this on February 18: "White man said if he die he should be buried as a Biafran", accompanied with the image Olunloyo just updated this month.

A reverse image search on the second image revealed the photo has been circulating online since at least February 2015.

Republic Reporters, a platform that thrives on citizen journalism, used the image on February 8, 2015 in their report regarding the funeral rites of 'Great Biafran', Prof. Innocent Odenigbo, the author of “A Human Comedy” who died earlier that year.
