FACT CHECK: Is Photo Showing Mamman Daura Giving Orders To E

Journalist In Trouble For Publishing Fake News Of Lady Who Slept With Dog

Sam Omatseye, a popular columnist with The Nation newspaper tweeted a photo claiming that it shows Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew Mamman Daura giving orders to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s Godwin Emefiele.

How reliable is the tweet?

Claim

The claim is that Mamman Daura was giving orders to Emefiele on the naira redesign policy.

The tweet said, “Look at how the head of the said Cabal, Mamman Daura, is directing the Governor without a state, Emefiele, on what to do.

"These Aso rock folks are seriously working against BAT not to succeed Buhari.

"The same folks who have been using Buhari name in carrying out shady deal.”

Verification

AllNews Nigeria’s fact check desk used a manual online search to identify the misinformation.

We discovered that a Sahara Reporters story has a photo which showed Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele alongside Late Ismaila Isa Funtua and former Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, during President Buhari’s official visit to the United States in 2015.

The photo was captured during a conversation between Emefiele and the late Funtua, a close associate of President Buhari and Second Republic minister, who was part of the president’s entourage during the visit and not Daura as the columnist claimed.

It is the photo that he used to back up his claims.

Funtua, before his death, was a newspaper publisher and innovator who passed on in 2020.

Verdict

The post is not connected to Maman Daura as Sam Omatseye portrayed, therefore, the claim is false.

Additionally, he has deleted the post from his Twitter handle.
