Federal civil servants received December salary — FG

Federal civil servants received December salary — FG

The Office of the Accountant-General of the fedration, Saturday affirmed that the salaries of the federal civil servants for the month of December had been paid.

It also stated that the workers would soon receive their wage award.

According to the Sunday PUNCH, the biggest opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, has published a statement criticising President Bola Tinubu's administration for neglecting to pay civil staff.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP's spokesperson, called the development "insensitive and unacceptable" in a statement released on Saturday.

Ologunagba said Tinubu’s administration had turned the country into a “huge internally displaced persons camp with millions of Nigerians becoming beggars and observing the period in hunger, anguish and misery”.

“It is obvious that the non-payment of the December salary critically needed by the workers, including our gallant security operatives at this period, is consistent with the atrocious character of the APC administration to weaponise poverty and further suppress Nigerians to surrender to totalitarianism,” the statement reads.

The PDP called the occurrence a "heartless act by the anti-people APC administration," stating it "never happened in the PDP's 16 years in government."

However, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH in Abuja, Bawa Mokwa, the spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General, stated that civil officials' salaries had been paid.

Bawa said, “The salaries have been paid. People have started getting their salaries from last week Friday. Most people got it day before yesterday. Check with the Ministries, Departments and Agencies. Confirm with them; that salaries have been paid.”

On the issue of the wage award, he said, “The wage award will come after the salaries.”

In an interview with journalists, a top public official in a Federal Government ministry verified the news, saying, "Yes, salaries have been paid." I got mine on Friday, but the pay award was missing."

According to the Sunday PUNCH, the Bola Tinubu administration has come under fire for recent delays in the payment of civil personnel salaries.

Some public servants, for example, did not get their November 2023 salary until the first week of December 2023, a new development in the civil service.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress disputed the PDP's claim of insensitivity against the Federal Government on Saturday, saying the alleged delay in payment of December salaries for federal officials could be ascribed to a technical glitch in the system.

The ruling party also urged the PDP not to make baseless assertions or damaging criticism that would lead the country astray.

Nze Chidi Duru, the APC's Deputy National Organising Secretary, chastised the PDP, emphasising that it was not everything a real opposition party should play politics with.
