Festive Season: Five Ways To Save Fuel On Long-Distance Road Trips

Festive Season: Five Ways To Save Fuel On Long-Distance Road

As we approach the holiday season, many Nigerians will travel across the country to relax, meet their families, and attend one function or another.

This means that drivers must be extra cautious on the road as traffic congestion worsens and many people look forward to arriving at their destination and spending time with their loved ones.

Travelling during the holiday season can be expensive because motorists must spend more money on fuel.

Here are five ways motorists can save on fuel while driving safely:

1. Fill Up Your Car Tank

In preparation for the trip ahead, fill up your petrol tank to cut down on the number of petrol stations you need to stop at during the trip.

As many motorists will be travelling on open roads, access to filling stations may be limited. To avoid being stranded, motorists should ensure they always have enough fuel.

2. Car Maintenance Must Be A Priority

Before embarking on a long-distance journey, make sure your vehicle is serviced.

This is to ensure that the vehicle is in good working order and is unlikely to break down.

Checking the brakes, steering, engine, and fluids such as oil, exhaust, and lights is all part of the process.

Before the trip, it is also critical to inspect the tyres, tyre pressure, and general wear and tear. The proper tyre pressure saves fuel for drivers.

3. Relax And Don't Be In A Haste

Motorists must adhere to speed limits and maintain a consistent speed while on the road.

This saves fuel and gives drivers control of their vehicles if an unexpected event occurs on the road.

Motorists must also be cautious while driving to avoid abruptly decelerating if they encounter obstacles such as stray animals or roadworks.

4. Rest And Prepare

Get plenty of rest before your trip. Drivers must be physically fit to drive by getting enough sleep before the trip.

It's critical to plan ahead of time and run errands, such as packing suitcases and preparing meals, to save time.

When you get enough rest and are prepared, you can travel on time and avoid having to drive faster, which saves fuel.

5. Map Your Journey

Travel planning allows you to identify shorter routes and roads to avoid due to roadwork and traffic congestion.

This results in lower fuel consumption. Avoid driving through towns or cities when travelling long distances because there is often an influx of pedestrians and numerous traffic lights.

These factors necessitate constant acceleration and deceleration, resulting in increased fuel consumption.
