FG approves electricity tariff increase

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved an increase in electricity tariff from N66 per kilowatt-hour to N225.

The Vice Chairman of the NERC, Musliu Oseni who conveyed the approval on Wednesday in a Press briefing said the decision affects customers under the Band A classification.

Allnews.ng gathered that the Band A customers are those who enjoy 20 hours of daily electricity supply.

The commission explained that the customers represent 15% of the current 12 million electricity subscribers across the country.

Oseni said: “We currently have 800 feeders that are categorised as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500.

"This means that 17 per cent now qualify as Band A feeders. These feeders only service 15 per cent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.

“The commission has issued an order which is titled April supplementary order and the commission allows a 235 kilowatt per hour.”
