FG Approves Use Of Hijab For Female Muslim Students

Students in hijabs

The Nigerian Government has approved the use of the Hijab for female Muslim students, warning that no student should be forced to wear it against her will.

There has been controversy about female Muslim students using the Hijab, with some seeing it as unacceptable.

The Hijab is a covering that is compulsory for every grown female Muslim, though not all follow the rules.

However, those who use it feel it is wrong to stop their female children from using the covering in schools, especially in Christian-dominated areas.

But the Federal Government in a circular dated February 1, 2023, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Andrew David Adejo said Muslim female students must be allowed to use the covering.

The circular was sent to all Principals of all the 112 Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Science and Technical Colleges of the country.

“This is to bring to your notice that the Ministry has approved the use of corporate/cape size Hijab as part of school uniform by female Muslim students in all the Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Science and Technical Colleges", part of the circular reads.
