The Federal Government on Tuesday commissioned for use and handed over internal rehabilitated roads in the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC) to enhance learning.

Handing over the rehabilitated 800 metre (0.8 kilometres) roads to UNEC authorities, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, said that quality infrastructure such as good roads would impact on quality education.

Fashola, who was represented by Anthony Ammaku, Federal Controller of Works in Enugu State, said that “although this is a civil work project, it is an investment in education.”

“The gap of our infrastructure needs is steadily being bridged by a gradual process of repairs, renewal and construction on major highways and it has reached the schools.

“It is undebatable that quality of education will be impacted by the quality of infrastructure and the learning environment and those who doubt it should simply listen to some of the feedback from students in the schools, where this type of intervention has taken place.

“We have successfully intervened in 64 internal Road projects in various Federal Tertiary Institutions and handed over a total of 46 as at March, 2022 and we have another 18 ready to be handed over, while we are currently attending to 19 roads in similar institutions across the country making a total of 83.”

"This is consistent with our progressive ideal of improving the human condition; and that process continues here today as we hand over this one in University of Nigeria; Enugu Campus (UNEC) as a critical intervention to support education.

“During the construction, over 100 people were employed in the process, contributing to the job creation initiatives of the government, and it is hoped that the school will now ensure that this asset is used properly and not abused,” he added.

Receiving the rehabilitated roads, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Edith Nwosu, commended the minister and Federal Controller of works for the intervention, which had helped to improve quality of learning and beauty of the institution.

Nwosu, who was represented by Humphrey Chukwuemeka, Director of Works in UNEC, said that the entire personnel and students of the institution appreciated the face lift the rehabilitated internal roads had added to the institution.

“One of the roads cuts across the major faculties of the institution and it is used by upto 80 per cent of both students and staff of the institution.

“However, we are grateful, thanking the Federal Government, but we are asking for more infrastructure and rehabilitation of some existing ones,” he said.

A student of faculty of law, Chisom Okolo, appreciated the Federal Government for easing movement and improving the neatness of the institution.
