FG Rehabilitates Roads In UNIBEN, Other Institutions

The Federal Government has rehabilitated 64 internal roads in various federal tertiary institutions across the country including the University of Benin.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, represented by an official of the Federal Road Controller in Edo State, Ademola Razak, made this known at the handover of the road earlier destroyed by erosion at the Site B of the UNIBEN, Ugbowo campus on Wednesday.

“We have successfully intervened in 64 internal road projects in various federal tertiary institutions and handed over a total of 46 as of March 2022.

"We now have another 18 ready to be handed over while we were attending to 19 roads in other institutions across the country making it a total of 83 roads.

“It is undeniable that the quality of education will be impacted by the quality of Infrastructures. Those who doubt it should simply listen to some of the feedback from students in the schools, where this type of Intervention has taken place,” he said.

The Minister noted that more than 50 persons were employed for the construction of the roads, providing an avenue for job creation as earlier mentioned by the federal government.

Fashola seeks the proper usage of the newly reclaimed road by the institution.

Reacting, the Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lilian Salami, praised the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), Minister Raji Fashola, Governor Godwin Obaseki and other principal players and stakeholders that made the project a reality.

Salami decried the danger encountered daily due to the 70 per cent encroachment of Site B of the University.

She added that Fashola had contributed much to the progress of the institution as an alumnus.

“I must commend the Federal Government and other stakeholders for this project. The road has been rehabilitated and this will help the school and adjourning communities to have access to good road,” Prof. Salami added.
