FG To Launch Significant Broadband Projects Initiatives In A

The federal government has said that it would award contracts on Thursday, November 24, in order to hasten the installation of broadband infrastructure throughout the nation.

The development of broadband infrastructure for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), as well as for tertiary and higher institutions of study across the country's six geographic zones, is one of the projects for which contracts will be granted.

Nigeria aims to reach 70% internet coverage by 2025 with the National Broadband Plan (NBP 2020-2025).

The installation of broadband connections in all tertiary institutions across the nation is a key component of the plan to do this.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, will preside over the beginning of the historic broadband efforts, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced in a statement.

The statement reads: “The event will witness the award of contracts for the provision of broadband infrastructure for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSME, as well as for tertiary and higher institutions of learning across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

“Pantami is also billed to present a book, ‘Skills Rather Than Just Degrees, authored by him, with a foreword written by Brad Smith, President, of Microsoft Corporation."

The National Communications Commission (NCC) outlined how providing broadband infrastructure to Nigerian academic institutions and MSMEs can help the country achieve most of the goals outlined in its National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS 2020-2030.)

“The event is expected to attract multi-stakeholders from the academia, technology enthusiasts, including prospective start-up companies, fintech organisations and other interested sectors, whose activities are billed to energize the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, NDEPS, 2020-2030.”

Following a presentation by the Minister, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recently gave its approval to the projects for the various geopolitical zones that are scheduled to commence.

The projects are anticipated to be finished within six months after the award date.

The announcement highlighted that several tech companies had been chosen by the NCC for the implementation of the strategic projects following "a transparent tendering procedure," however, the companies to be given the contracts have not yet been identified.
