FG To Partner With African Union On Free Movement Across Bor

Rauf Aregbesola

Nigeria's Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has said that the federal government would be partnering with the African Union (AU) on movement across borders.

He said the partnership would ensure the free movement of persons across borders within the ECOWAS countries.

Aregbesola made this known in a statement on Wednesday when he received an AU delegation at the Interior Ministry.

According to the statement made available by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Afonja Ajibola, the Minister assured the delegation of the federal government's readiness for the partnership.

The Minister revealed that Nigeria had been discouraged to go into the partnership because of the lingering security challenges in the country and the Sahel region.

He added that the federal government has introduced the Visa on arrival to step in the move for the actualization of the partnership.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore gave the delegation assurances that consultations were already ongoing to actualize the partnership.

Meanwhile, the AU delegation was led by Rita Amokhobu.

Amokhobu said the visit was to intimate the Minister of the outcome of their visit to the Benin-Seme border, adding that the team found out how Nigeria had complied with the AU treaty on the free movement of persons and goods.
