In a recent announcement, the global governing body FIFA disclosed that has stripped Indonesia of its hosting rights for the upcoming Under-20 soccer World Cup scheduled to take place from May 20 to June 11, 2023.
The decision comes after Indonesia's football federation, the PSSI, cancelled the draw for the tournament after the governor of Bali, a predominantly Hindu island, refused to host Israel's team.
FIFA has stated that a new host will be announced shortly, and potential sanctions against the PSSI will be decided later.
Earlier this month, protests erupted in Jakarta calling for Israel's team to be barred from the tournament, as Indonesia's population is predominantly Muslim.
FIFA has pledged to provide the PSSI with assistance in the coming months, following a deadly stadium stampede that killed 135 spectators in October 2022.
