FIIRO Research In Raw Materials Develops 250 Technologies

The Director-General of the Federal Institute for Industrial Research (FIIRO), Dr Jummai Adamu, said that the organisation carried out innovative research on some raw resources in Nigeria that had resulted in the development of no less than 250 innovations.

She made this statement on FIIRO's day at the 7th annual STI Expo 2023 on Tuesday in Abuja.

She claimed that the advancement of these technologies had led to the emergence of successful businesses that had resulted in the creation of jobs.

She said that this was one of the Institute's contributions to the Federal Government's innovation-driven diversification programme.

“We also focused on R&D activities that are market driven, demand-oriented and can move Nigeria from import dependent to sustainable self-reliant and production for exports,” she said.

Adamu cited the creation and manufacturing of high-nutrient biscuits for school-age children as one of the Institute's accomplishments.

She also spoke about the creation and manufacturing of therapeutic ready-to-use foods for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition and nutraceuticals for the treatment of illnesses like sickle cell anaemia.

The creation of antilemouc/hypolipidemic from certain fruits for the control of obesity and the exploitation of neem extracts for the production of neem skin care/oral hygiene products were other accomplishments.

Adamu said that FIIRO had created and produced a fishmeal analogue using different resources.

She continued, citing countless other accomplishments including the development and use of industrial enzymes, the processing of fresh tomatoes into various culinary forms, and many others.

The FIIRO D-G claimed that in an effort to grow the STI industry, they were working with groups like Mountain Top University and Jebba Paper Mill Industries, among others.

According to Adamu, FIIRO has launched new R&D commodities, services, and products for display at the exhibition.

She exhorted partners and investors to invest in the innovative R&D products of the Institute.
