Finland Launches Parliamentary Debate Over NATO Bid

Finnish Parliament building

Members of the Finnish parliament have pushed for legislation affirming that Finland accepts the terms of the NATO treaty.

Finland will debate the bill, coinciding with a visit from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg – who will meet with Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinisto.

A vote is also expected by Wednesday.

The country has so far stressed its preference to join NATO with Sweden.

It also comes as Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had said on Monday that Turkey looked favourably on Finland’s bid ahead of Sweden.

Çavuşoğlu also announced on Monday that negotiations between the countries would resume on March 9.

Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

All NATO members except Turkey and Hungary have ratified their accession, but unanimity is required.
