The Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB) has picked 36,000 Almajirai off the streets of the state.

The enrolment of the Almajirai back to school is one of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri's policies for free education to all. Chairman of ADSUBEB, Dr Salihi Ibrahim Ateequ said the government is expecting a higher number next year.

“At the highest level of Best Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme next year, all the almajirai on our roadsides would be absorbed, about 50,000 of them, that’s our target," Ateequ told Leadership.

While noting the government's interest in changing the narrative in the education sector, he said all counterparts payments would be made.

“Government is prompt in payment of its counterpart fund, turning the fortunes of the education sector for the upper within the state," he added.

Explaining further the government's plans, he said 21 local government areas will benefit from 20,000 instructional materials to be distributed in partnership with UNICEF, UBEC and SUBEB.

Dr Ateequ said, “The assorted materials will make our pupils ready for learning as everything is contained within the varsity bag."

He further stated that the board has also distributed 17 motorcycles, laptops and printers to selected government education executive secretaries and heads of quality assurance units for schools’ supervision.

He said the move by the government was to improve the quality of teaching and learning in schools.

While waging support for Governor Fintiri's administration, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Rodney Nathan said the union is solely behind him.

Nathan further appreciated the governor for his support and advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the items.
