Fire razes Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island, destroys multiple

A devastating fire tore through the popular Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island, resulting in the destruction of multi-million naira worth of goods, houses, and shops on Tuesday.

The inferno engulfed five buildings, comprising shops and warehouses, and raged for over four hours, reducing them to ashes.

Amidst the chaos, one trader reportedly collapsed but was rescued by paramedics deployed to the scene.

The intensity of the fire caused four of the affected buildings to collapse in succession.

This incident occurred less than twenty-four hours after a nearby Balogun Market witnessed the destruction of about twenty shops and goods in a separate fire outbreak.

While the cause of the Dosunmu Market fire remains unknown at the time of reporting, unconfirmed reports suggest it may have originated from a power generator being refueled while in operation. Allegedly, a trader refueling their generator failed to switch it off, leading to the outbreak.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the inferno.

LASEMA, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that the fire began around 10 a.m. and swiftly spread to adjacent buildings.

The cause of the fire remained undetermined as the blaze rapidly escalated, prompting an extensive Search, Rescue, and Recovery Operation.

Despite the intensity of the fire, no casualties were recorded. However, an adult female collapsed during firefighting efforts and received immediate medical attention from LRU Paramedics before being transported to Marina General Hospital.

Emergency responders, including LASEMA and NEMA teams, are collaborating to contain the fire and prevent its spread to neighboring structures.
