Firefighters Struggle To Contain California Wild Fire

Firefighters in California on Tuesday, November 26, worked tirelessly to fight a brush fire that was out of control throughout the night in a community near Santa Barbara, displacing thousands of people.

The fire, dubbed "Cave Fire", started in Monday in the Los Padres National Forest and has since grown to over 4,300 acres as it burned through residential areas in Santa Barbara, Goleta and other close communities just north of Los Angeles.

Nearly 6,000 people were evacuated from their homes (of about 2,300) by some 600 firefighters, taking them to safety and enabling them to effectively fight the errant fires.

“The Cave Fire is burning under some of the toughest firefighting conditions anywhere in the world,” said Los Padres National Forest Fire Chief Jimmy Harris.

“We’ve experienced several offshore wind events at this point, and that has just dried the fuel bed out to the point where we’re seeing the fire behavior we saw last night.”

He also stated that the fight against the fire has been exigent, as high winds pushed the flames downhill and back uphill.

The source of the fire is unknown, and has been unable to be fruitfully put under control, but they were hopeful that a storm would come in to save the day, putting out the fires.
