Five Killed In Uganda Ghastly Road Accident

People Gather At the Aftermath Of The Accident

Five people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a Friday Road crash involving a passenger bus and a charcoal truck at Migyeera Village in Nakasongola District along the Kampala- Gulu Highway.

The accident involved a California Company bus and a stationary truck that had developed a mechanical problem at the time of the horrific accident.

"The bodies of the five people have been taken to Nakasongola Health Centre IV mortuary," said Savana Region Police spokesperson Sam Twinemazima.

"Alex Muwanga has been identified as one of the deceased."

Eyewitness Joseph Byaruhanga, who was driving separately in a Nation Media Group (NMG) car at the time, narrowly escaped being trapped in the crash, but stated that "the speeding bus failed to break and crashed into the truck."

"It was a terrifying scene as I tried to save my life when the bus rear-ended my car."

"Fortunately, I was able to park my vehicle, which had minor damage," he told Monitor, a Uganda media house in the aftermath of the incident on Friday.

Faustino Omagor, one of the survivors, also blamed the crash on speeding.

"I survived the accident, but I witnessed the gruesome deaths of four people on the bus."

"I don't know the identities of the deceased people, but we boarded the bus from Arua City destined for Kampala City," he stated briefly.

Travellers included businesspeople and an undisclosed number of pilgrims to Namugongo ahead of the annual June 3 Martyrs Day celebrations in Namugongo, Wakiso District.

Every month, dozens of people are killed in road accidents in Uganda.
