Five Promising Nigerian Artistes Who Died In Their 20s

Death is inevitable and every soul shall one day succumb to its whim no matter the status, gender or race. 

Celebrities have always been seen by most people as higher beings, however, like every other human, celebrities also are immortal and will someday succumb to death. 

However, the deaths of some celebrities are rather too often and shocking that when they happen it shakes the very core of the entertainment industry.  

This is the case for most Nigerian celebrities who have died suddenly, especially in the Nigerian music sector. 

Yesterday, September 12, we all received the shocking death of one of Nigeria's promising musicians/Rappers in the person of Mohbad. 

Mohbad's sudden death comes as a surprise to most of us and it has also renewed the pain that always comes with the death of losing a celebrity, especially the young and promising ones. 

It is in light of this that we have decided to look at five promising Nigerian artistes who died suddenly while in their 20s. 

1. Goldie

Susan Oluwabimpe Harvey, better known as Goldie, was a young Nigerian singer who had established herself as one of the country's most popular female performers before her death.

The singer passed away as a result of complications from lung failure. She passed away on February 14, 2013, just eight months before her 30th birthday.  


2. Dablixx

Oniyide Azeez, professionally known as Dablixx Osha, a 26-year-old Nigerian trap rapper and songwriter born in Lagos State, died in November 2022 after complaining of stomach ache.

The late 'No Feelings' crooner became an internet phenomenon after releasing a series of Instagram freestyles in which he demonstrated his skill to trap in Yoruba.

Dablixx, who was signed to MMG Records, died after releasing a song called 'Pray We Live Long' in which he claimed his mother dreamed he died.


3. Dagrin

Oladapo Olaonipekun, popularly known as Dagrin, a rising Nigerian indigenous rapper, died on April 22, 2010.

The renowned rapper, who was a force to be reckoned with in the world of entertainment, died after crashing his recently purchased Nissan Maxima into a stalled truck late at night in front of the Alakara Police Station in Mushin, Lagos. 

Despite being transferred to two hospitals for treatment, the superstar died in a coma eight days after the vehicle accident.

Dagrin was 25 years old when he sadly passed on. 

His death remains one of the most tragic events in the Nigerian music industry since it shook both Nigerians and those who admired him as a person. 


4. Zara Gretti

Margret Oluwatoyin Ejiro Joseph, commonly known as Zara, died at the age of 28. Zara, like the others on the list, died in her prime from multiple sclerosis. 


5. Mohbad

Nigerian singer Ireoluwa Oladimeji, popularly known as Mohbad died yesterday, September 12 at age 27 becoming the latest Nigerian celebrity to have died this year. 

The singer’s death has been confirmed by his family members on different social media platforms operating in Nigeria. 

YBNL music executive and singer, Olamide, also confirmed Mohbad’s death via his X handle. 

The cause of Mohbad's death has been allegedly attributed to an ear infection. Rumour also has it that Mohbad died as a result of being struck by charm during his last performance in Ikorodu, Lagos State. 

Mohbad died just months after terminating his contract with Marlian Music in October 2022, citing violence and inability to pay royalties, among other things.
