Five soldiers have been killed by jihadists during an attack on an outpost in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria, sources in the army have disclosed.

“We lost five soldiers in the surprise attack on the checkpoint,” an unidentified military officer said.

The jihadists had opened fire on soldiers at a checkpoint in the outskirt of Mainok, a town in Borno State.

“Some of the terrorists” were killed and two vehicles equipped with machine guns were recovered after the militants were engaged in a fiery battle.

According to another source in the military, the five soldiers who lost their lives were "outgunned" by the terrorists, who carted away with three vehicles belonging to the military.
