Five teams that have scored 100+ goals in AFCON history

The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) stage remains a riveting demonstration of footballing prowess, with the teams serving as true ambassadors of the beautiful game in Africa.

Fans anxiously await the next chapters in AFCON history, as these football powerhouses aim to build on their outstanding goal-scoring legacy in future tournaments.

In today's listicle, Allnews.ng delves into the history of the African tournament, specifically highlighting the top five countries that have etched their names in the record books by scoring over a century of goals.

5. Ghana

In 1963, the Black Stars won their first AFCON title. Ghana has won four African championships and scored an astounding 133 goals in 102 games. Andre Ayew, the son of the famous Abedi Pele, leads Ghana's goal-scoring statistics with ten goals.

Ghana's football past is entrenched in glory, therefore their involvement in any AFCON competition offers fascinating encounters and stunning goals.

4. Cameroon

Cameroon and Nigeria are equal in most goal tally with five AFCON championships and 137 goals, respectively.

The Indomitable Lions accomplished this accomplishment in 91 games, six less than their Nigerian opponents.

Cameroonian football icon Samuel Eto'o is the competition's all-time best scorer, with an amazing 18 goals.

As Cameroon strives to reestablish its supremacy, all eyes are on the Indomitable Lions' goal-scoring ability, which already set sail in the group stage.

3. Nigeria

Nigeria is renowned as the most decorated side in AFCON history, with three gold, four silver, and an unprecedented eight bronze medals, and they have won every third-place playoff.

The Super Eagles have scored 137 goals in 97 games, with the late Rashidi Yekini contributing 13 to their impressive total.

Nigeria's impressive performance in the competition demonstrates their unwavering greatness.

However, the current Nigerian team at the ongoing AFCON 2024 has not been impressive with goal scoring as they have only scored three goals in the whole of their group stage matches.

2. Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast, which is currently hosting the latest edition, ranks second in the goal-scoring hierarchy, having scored 143 goals in 99 games in 24 tournaments.

The Elephants won in 1992 and 2015, and Laurent Pokou is their all-time leading scorer in AFCON, with 14 goals.

Ivory Coast's phenomenal goal-scoring record adds an added dimension of excitement to the competition, they are looking to increase their goal-scoring score on home territory as the competition enters its round of 16 stage.

1. Egypt

At the top of the list are the African football juggernauts Egypt, who have won seven AFCON championships. The Pharaohs have left an indelible imprint on tournament history, scoring an impressive 168 goals in 107 games to become the highest-scoring nation in AFCON.

Their remarkable path includes an astounding ten finals, with Hassan El-Shazly standing as the country's highest scorer with 12 goals, according to Transfermarkt.

However, this current edition of AFCON has been a shocker as teams like Egypt who are expected to dominate are rather lagging in both goals and winning.
