 Fleeing Children, Others Drown In Niger As Bandits Attack

Boat mishap

Following bandit's attack on two communities of Niger State, about twenty people have drowned while fleeing for safety.

The people, including women and children, drowned in the Guni-Zumba River of Munya Local Government Area.

The bandits had attacked the Guni and Kurgbaku communities of the same local government forcing them to flee for safety.

The incident was reported to have taken place on Wednesday morning.

Reports say the boat conveying thr victims capsized while crossing the river for safety.

One Shehu Abubakar, who spoke to Daily Trust stated that the boat was filled beyond its capacity.

Abubakar said, “Bandits invaded our communities this morning, and in an attempt to flee, some people drowned in the Guni-Zumba river. 

'Due to overloading, the boat capsized in the middle of the water."

However, there has not been an official figure for the victims but residents say the people including women and children were over 20 on the boat.

As of the time of filing this report, all efforts to reach the Niger State Police Command through its spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun proved abortive.
