Following floods in Jigawa State, no fewer than 134 persons have been killed while over N1.5 trillion worth of properties have been destroyed.

This was disclosed by the Jigawa state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Namadi when he hosted the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) chief of the field office of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States, Rahman Rihub Mahmud Fara today (Saturday).

Namadi said while the water is moving to the Eastern part of the state, Kirikasamma and Birniwa local government areas are at risk.

According to him, while 272,189 people have been affected, 76,887 have been rendered homeless.

He further stated that the flood has completely destroyed a village while cutting another council area from others by road.

Daily Trust reports that Namadi said 22 roads and 11 bridges were washed away by the water.

While calling for support from the federal government and partners like the UNICEF, Namadi noted the need to evacuate sands filling dams in the state. 

Meanwhile, UNICEF Chief Fara said he and his team visited to assess the level of damages recorded by the flood in the state and see what can be done to help the affected communities.

He further called for collaboration with the Jigawa state government in emergency and response planning against the future.
