Chinedum Okereke, the Chairman of the Association of Food, Beverage and Tobacco Employers, has urged the government to support its members in tackling some of the challenges confronting their production in the country.
He spoke during the association’s 44th annual general meeting in Lagos.
“It is no gain saying that the sector is playing a very special role in expanding various economic opportunities available in Nigeria because of its centrality to the life and health of the people.
“Therefore, there is a need for governmental support to the industry in ensuring food security and safety in the face of adulteration and counterfeiting, government should collaborate with the industry in the fight against these criminals", Okereke said.
He said part of the support required would include a deliberate reconsideration of the demands made on member companies, which in many cases were outrageous and unreasonable.
“Government needs to understand that his unsavoury approach impedes the growth of businesses”, he said.
He said noted that the food and beverage sector remains a major force in the Nigerian economy in terms of its importance and relevance.
