North Korea’s official newspaper has urged economic self-reliance amid reports of food shortages.
It argued that relying on external aid to cope with the food shortage situation would be like taking “poisoned candy”.
The commentary, published in the Rodong Sinmun on Wednesday, comes after the US-based think tank, 38 North, warned last month that North Korea was on the brink of famine.
However, the Rodong Sinmun has cautioned against receiving economic help from “imperialists” who, it said, use aid to interfere with the country's internal politics.
The paper said; “It is a mistake to try to boost the economy by accepting and eating this poisoned candy."
Over the years, North Korea has had ties with food shortages, including the famine in the 1990s.
Experts say the current food shortages hampering the country is triggered by poor harvests amid extreme weather conditions.
