Former Ekiti Gubernatorial Candidate Assaulted By Police

Former Ekiti Gubernatorial Candidate Assaulted By Police

Temitope Omotayo, a former gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), has accused the personnel of the Ekiti Police of physically assaulting him.

Omotayo while speaking with journalists revealed that he was assaulted on Wednesday by men of the Rapid Response Squad of the Command in front of his office in Ado-Ekiti.

The lawyer added that he was arrested in front of his office at No 8, Dallimore Street, Ado Ekiti on the allegation that he did a video recording of the officers packing the properties in a shop close to his office.

He also alleged that after his arrest, he was taken to the RRS office where he was harassed and physically assaulted before he was locked in detention in a cell for two hours.

Omotayo who disclosed that the suspects in the cell were instructed to assault him while in detention added that it took the intervention of the leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) in the state to secure his release and the return of his mobile phone to him.

“Video recording of such occurrence is not an offence according to the Nigerian law. Abroad, when the police are going for such operations, they take cameras along.”

While stressing that legal action would be taken against the RRW personnel who assaulted him, Omotayo urged the Ekiti State Police Command to fish out the officers responsible for his ordeal and bring them to justice.

Sunday Abutu, the Ekiti Police Command spokesperson when contacted promised to get back but at the time of this report, nothing has been heard from him.
