Former Minority Leader Advocates State Police To Address Sec

Kawu Sumaila

A Former Minority Leader, Federal House of Representatives, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila has advocated for the establishment of state police to fully address the security situation bedeviling the country.

Kawu Sumaila noted that Nigeria’s security system is failing over the times, adding that the system is not in tandem with the need and desire of the people.

“For instance in a country with heterogenous nature like Nigeria, federal system as we claim to be with over 200 million people with one Inspector General of Police, it is difficult for him to Police Nigeria, so whether we like it or not, we need to have a second look at the policing system of the country,” Sumaila however said.

Sumaila who is the Kano- South Senatorial Candidate under the Platform of NNPP in 2023 Elections stated that calling for state police is imperative considering the growth of Nigeria’s population, inadequate police personnel and rising of crime and criminality in society.

“I’m 100% in support of state police. We need to have a state police.

"Take Kano State for example, we are almost 20 million and the total number of police in kano is less than 8,000 and from my own local government we have two division and the police men there is less than 80 personnel with population of almost 500,000.

“On the other hand, we have the Local Government with about 600 men in general, what are they doing?

"We need to attend to these areas. We need to secure the country and the people before we talk about development."
