A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Zaks Foundation for Humanity (ZFH), has promised to lighten the burden on the vulnerable people on the streets with its monthly distribution of food items.
Ahmed Aliyu, Chairman of the NGO, gave the indicationon Wednesday in Abuja.
Aliyu said that the foundation is seriously concerned about the enormous deprivation of items and poverty challenges among the vulnerable in Nigerian communities.
Aliyu said that such deprivations had resulted in extreme hunger, unattended health challenges across the country, adding that the organisation had taken a bold step to tackle the menace within its capacity.
“Zaks Foundation for Humanity (ZFH) just rounded off the first phase of its monthly Nutrition Assistance Programme (NAP), which is also known as Feed Me Programme, in Kogi state, North Central Nigeria.
“The menace of hunger, poor health and other indicators of multidimensional poverty is bedevilling many Nigerian communities and ZFH believes no single family in our communities should go to bed hungry.
“There is enough food for everyone on this planet but not everyone eats, we have provided monthly food assistance to more than 20,000 people.
“In the past one month, we have given food and Mosquito Nets to more than 38,700 households, respectively, in the North Central states of Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi and the FCT in the first phase of the programme.
“States like Benue, Kwara and Plateau will come next in the second phase of the monthly programme,” he said.
Aliyu said that NAP is a short-term solution to meet the needs of the vulnerable, and that the acronym had gone a long way to help cushion the effects of hunger in Nigerian communities.
He said that this short-term solution is absolutely vital and it is designed to ensure that the indigents and the vulnerable people in local communities have food to live on.
According to him, the longer-term solution is in the areas of world changing solutions to eliminate poverty through the provision of tools for increasing agricultural and entrepreneurial productivity.
He said that social and behaviour change communications to the most vulnerable are being introduced into these communities by ZHF, and enjoined individuals, groups, and communities to support the foundation.
Aliyu said there is the need for support ZFH to enable it increase the reach and coverage of other communities in Nigeria in addressing these nationwide challenges.
