French Open: Swiate Into Quarter-Finals Following Tsurenko's Retirement

French Open: Swiate Into Quarter-Finals Following Tsurenko'

World number one Iga Swiatek has booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the French Open following Lesia Tsurenko's retirement in the first set of Wednesday's fourth round clash.

Swiatek was leading 5-1 when the 34-year-old pulled out after being broken to love.

Prior to Tsurenko retiring, she was treated by medical staff when trailing 4-1, with the Ukrainian having her blood pressure and pulse taken.

The result means the defending champion will battle American teenager Coco Gauff who won 7-5 6-2 to advance to her third consecutive quarterfinals at Roland Garros..

The encounter will be a rematch of last year's French Open final which Swiatek won in straight sets.

It will also be their first meeting on clay since last year and Gauff has expressed that she's ready to improve on last year's result.

"I've the type of mentality that says if you want to be the best you have to beat the best," said the 19-year-old American.

"I think also if you want to improve, you have to play the best.

"I feel like the way my career has gone so far, if I see a level, and if I'm not quite there at that level, I know I have to improve and I feel like you don't really know what you have to improve on until you see that level."
