FRSC confirms kidnapping of two personnel by gunmen in Ebony

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State has verified that two of its workers were kidnapped by gunmen on the Abakaliki-Enugu federal route.

Roads in some regions of Ebonyi and adjacent states have recently become perilous for commuters due to the frequent abductions by gunmen.

The Nkalagu (Ebonyi) and Idodo (Enugu) axes of the route are the worst afflicted, with abductions growing every day.

Henry Igwe, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, informed reporters in Abakaliki on Tuesday that both soldiers were taken on March 8. He said that both members had completed their duty at the corps' Nkalagu headquarters and were kidnapped as they returned to Enugu.

“Contacts were made and it was established by their families that they never got home. The families said that some people contacted them and said they were kidnappers and were demanding ransom.

"The negotiations are between the families and kidnappers and as an organisation, we have been doing as much as we can,” he said.

Meanwhile, earlier today, (Tuesday) gunmen raided the Ilejemeje local government area secretariat in Ẹda-Oniyọ, Ekiti State, sparking panic and mayhem among personnel.

The assaults disrupted routine operations and prompted staff to abandon the building for safety.

The hoodlums, who were claimed to have come from the Obbo-Ayegunle village in adjacent Kwara State, aggressively invaded the secretariat, firing numerous bullets, forcing personnel to flee in all directions, running for their lives, and one of them was hurt in the subsequent chaos.

The hoodlums allegedly vandalised the Secretariat building and other council property.

Though the motive of the attack is still unknown at the time of writing, it has been credibly reported that the two villages have been locked in a conflict for some time due to land issues.

During the onslaught, which lasted several hours, one victim was alleged to have incurred significant injuries and was taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Iye-Ekiti for immediate medical assistance.

According to sources, the hoodlums attacked the Secretariat at about 10 a.m., loaded with hazardous weapons like guns, charms, and cutlasses.

Speaking about the incident, the Eleda of the Eda Oniyo community, Oba Awodipo Awolola, stated that the hoodlums had attacked several of the community's members with charm on their farmlands in a matter of days, causing worry and anxiety in the community.
