Fury Survives Scare Against Ngannou Via Split Decision

Fury Survives Scare Against Ngannou Via Split Decision

WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury claimed a contentious split-decision victory over former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Fury took the result 96-93 and 95-94 on two of the judges' cards while Ngannou had 95-94 on the card of the other judge.

The bout lasted for 10 full rounds with no title on the line and almost delivered one of boxing’s biggest upsets.

Ngannou struck a massive punch to send the 35-year-old self-styled “Gypsy King” onto the canvas in the third round.

Fury looked stunned and rattled but got back to his feet and was able to see out the round after dancing away from the 37-year-old to seek respite in the corner.

The Briton had to acknowledge the Cameroonian who had never boxed professionally before, saying: "That definitely wasn't in the script.

"Francis is a hell of a fighter. Strong, a big puncher, and a lot better boxer than we all thought he’d ever be.

"Listen, he’s a very awkward man, and he’s a good puncher and I respect him a lot. Before the fight, and afterwards.

"He was very awkward, he wasn’t coming forward, he was just standing back waiting for me to land my punches and then trying to counter.

"He’s given me probably one of my toughest fights in the last 10 years."

Commenting on the knockdown, Fury added: "It’s part of boxing, I got caught behind my head again, I wasn’t hurt or nothing. I was alright, it was what it was.

"I don’t know how close it was, but I got the win. I’ve been out of the ring a long time again, 11 months since my last fight and you can see it in here, ring rust.

"No excuses, he’s a good fighter and caught me with some good punches. I’ve got a cut above my left eye. If it’s from a headbutt I’m not sure."

Reflecting on not emerging victorious after an impressive performance, Ngannou said: "It didn't go my way. I might have come up short today. I'll come back."
