Gabon Coup: Presidency Reacts To Possibility Of Military Takeover In Nigeria

Gabon Coup: Presidency Reacts To Possibility Of Military Tak

The federal government while reacting to the possibility of a coup in Nigeria dismissed the claim while asserting that Nigeria has grown past the era of a forceful military takeover.

According to Mohammed Idris, Nigeria's Minister of Information and National Orientation, the age of aggressive military takeovers is over.

Idris stated this in response to the recent coups in two African countries, Niger Republic and Gabon.

"I can assure you that there is no dread or concern. We've moved past that, and we've been a democratic country all along, with democratic institutions strengthening," the minister declared.

"Nigeria is a unique country. Nigerians will no longer accept such, thus it will be impossible for anyone to come out and do so at this stage in our national growth, or for us to begin harbouring any fears.

“We have to stand up against military takeover anywhere on the continent. That does not mean we are afraid that such could happen in Nigeria.

"The fact that something like that happened elsewhere does not mean we have to live in fear. No, we have gone past that.”

On Wednesday, a military takeover in Gabon brings to seven the number of coups on the African continent within the past three years.
