Gabon: Deposed President Bongo's Wife Jailed

Ali Bongo Ondimba, the wife of Gabon's overthrown president, has been sentenced to prison.

Following the coup in the central African nation on August 30, 2023, Ali Bongo was placed under house arrest, effectively ending the 55-year rule of the Bongo dynasty.

The putschists claim that the former president and his entourage tampered with the election results.

Francois Zimeray, a Bongo family lawyer, said in a statement on Thursday that Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, who is suspected of embezzling public monies, was arrested on Wednesday evening.

The detention was termed as an "arbitrary and illegal procedure" by Zimeray.

Bongo's wife was indicted on September 28 for money laundering, forgery, and record falsification.

In the most recent instance, Sylvia Bongo and her son, Nourredin Bongo Valentin, were accused of attempting to influence the former president, who is still recovering from a catastrophic stroke suffered in 2018.

The pair were accused of virtually running the oil-rich country for the past five years while misusing public funds.

Since the coup, Nourredin Bongo Valentin has also been detained on corruption charges.

“We condemned this illegal procedure.

“There is a difference between justice and arbitrary actions, between the law and revenge", lawyer Zimeray stated.
