GBV: NGO Calls For Increased Women Training

A Non-Government Organisation (NGO), Christian Women for Excellence and Empowerment in Nigerian Society (CWEENS), has advocated increased women training to check Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The Programme Manager of CWEENS, Ochanya Fatoki, made the call during a three-day training on reproductive health rights, organised for 40 women in Jos South, Jos North and Jos East on Wednesday.

Fatoki said that the training is aimed at educating women on their reproductive health rights, with a view to enabling them pay attention to their reproductive health.

She added that this would in-turn help in reducing vulnerability to Sexual Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

She disclosed that one of the objective of the training is to reduce stigma and negative perception toward SGBV survivors within target communities.

“It is also to reduce the vulnerability of women in communities and expose trained women to appropriate SGBV response mechanisms available in the state.

“It will create awareness on the existence of CWEENS Safe Shelter and its programmes in responding to women and girls who are survivors or at risk of GBV,” she said.

Meanwhile Dr Nyango Philip, a lecturer at the University of Jos, and Facilitator of the training, urged women to give more attention to their reproductive and sexual health.

Nyango also called on women to advocate solutions to tackle reproductive health challenges from concerned and relevant stakeholders.

He said that empowering women economically would greatly enhance the reproductive health outcomes of women and amplify their voices.
