The Gombe state government has closed down all 29 private colleges of health technology in the state.
This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Gombe state Commissioner for health, Dr. Habu Dahiru.
Dahiru said the colleges were closed due to registration and accreditation reasons.
He further explained that while some of the colleges are not licensed, some are unequipped while lacking the required man power.
He also lamented the rate at which graduates of the colleges end up loosing employment due to the non accreditation of the colleges.
He disclosed that this is one of the reasons to suspend their activities until they respond to the needs of the government.
“In fact some of them are not registered, lack manpower and are not certified to practise.
"Therefore, we suspended their operation and a committee was set up to look into the issues before reopening them,” as reported Daily Trust.
Dahiru said the move by the government was to checkmate the alarming number of quacks in the health sector.
He added that only colleges that are upto standard would be reopened after thorough checks while others would be closed permanently.
