Google Doodle Honours Stephen Hawking’s 80 Birthday

Tech giant, Google has created a video Doodle that gives a condensed version of the life of world-famous theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking as he Posthumously turned 80 on January 8, 2022.

Google worked with his family to create a video Doodle using Hawking's famously computer-generated voice to narrate his work and experiences from the time he graduated. The contribution of late Hawking to the understanding of the universe remains immense and shouldn’t be forgotten.

Stephen Hawking was a British scientist, professor and author who performed groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology, and whose books helped to make science accessible to everyone.

At age 21, while studying cosmology at the University of Cambridge, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Part of his life story was depicted in the 2014 film The Theory of Everything.

Google used Hawking’s voice in the Doodle to talk about his work on the black holes— one of the scientific works he's most known for is the Hawking radiation, which is the theory that black holes emit radiation.

His daughter and son, Robert and Tim Hawking in a statement said "We also believe he would have found it important to show that he never allowed the challenges of his physical condition to limit his power of expression nor his determination to make an impact on the world in which he lived,"

"We hope that his example offers inspiration and hope globally to all who face great challenges at this difficult time. Our father would have been 80 years old today and we thank everyone who has joined in the celebration of his extraordinary life and the legacy he gave to us all."
