Google TV Is Getting Parent-Controlled Watchlists, AI-powere

As part of its ongoing efforts to expand the options of its TV operating system for family use, Google is bringing a number of new kid-focused features to Google TV, including parental watchlists and AI-powered suggestions.

This is just the latest effort from the Android manufacturer.

The company said that by including these capabilities, content discovery and suggestions for children will be enhanced.

According to a blog post by the company, parents can add movies directly from their profiles to their children's "must watch" lists (by simply tapping the watchlist button on the movies they came across and pressing add).

The company is also introducing AI-powered recommendations for kids — because Google loves AI.

Children can now look at popular shows and movies on their Google TV home screen based on installed apps and parent-defined ratings levels.

If they don’t like a title that has been recommended to them and doesn’t wish to see it again, they can press and hold the select button and then tap “hide” to remove the suggestion from the list.

Google's continual efforts to make its services more kid-friendly are reflected in the latest enhancements.

In order to help kids transition from YouTube Kids to the main YouTube app in a secure way, Google introduced supervised accounts for YouTube last year.

Through this function, parents can also impose limitations on users' ability to see content, leave comments, or upload videos.

Guardians can specify one of three levels of access: "Explore" for viewers 9 and older; "Explore more" for those 13 and older; or "Most of YouTube" for unrestricted access to all videos on YouTube.

In order to give kids access to the main YouTube app with the proper content limitations, the search engine giant said that it is also bringing this supervised experience to Google TV.

It's important to note that when parents create these supervised accounts, they give permission for the collecting and use of information from children's profiles in order to comply with COPPA, a US privacy regulation that establishes guidelines for websites that offer services to children.

Last year, the business debuted kid-specific Google TV profiles that let parents set restrictions on app access and screen time.

The Chromecast with Google TV (both 4K and HD versions) and other Google TV products from companies like Hisense and Philips, Sony and TCL will begin receiving these functionalities today, according to Google.
