Governor Bala Commends Nigerian Media For Supporting Democra

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has commended the Nigerian Media for their support of the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

The governor noted that they have played significant roles in building democratic culture, institutions and practices.

The governor made this known on Thursday during the public presentation of a book titled, “Media and Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy: Threats, Constraints and Resilience" organized by the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought.

During the event, the governor who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, served as the Chairman and Chief Presenter of the book.

The governor appreciated the author, editors of the book and organisers of the event for coming up with the "well-researched scholarly endeavor which has a direct practical bearing on media development and the Nigerian democracy."

The governor also discussed the importance of the media in sustaining democracy and its complex relationship with politicians.

He said the current debate in Nigeria revolves around the media's role in empowering civic spaces and democratic governance.

“It is a known fact that politicians can sometimes be excessive in trying to constrain the media and in turn the media, especially in this age of new and social media, can be excessive, intolerant and volatile in defence of its space or territory," he said.

He further urged politicians and the media to promote dialogue, understanding and respect for the benefit of the public.

Governor Bala called for unbiased reporting and highlighted the significance of the book.

Dr Sam Amadi, the Chief Host of the event, praised the governor's support for the media, adding that despite its constitutional role, recognizable as the fourth estate of the realm, the Nigerian media has a history of confronting daunting challenges.

The book which was authored by Paul Obi, was reviewed by Professor Abiodun Adeniyi.

The event was attended by politicians, diplomats and media practitioners across the country.
