Group Appeals To Buhari To Assent To Anti-Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions Bill

Group Appeals To Buhari To Assent To Anti-Sexual Harassment

The Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy Cluster has said it will continue to appeal to President Muhammad Buhari to assent to the Anti-Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Institutions Bill that has since been passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly.

The bill was sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in 2020.

The leader of the group, Comrade Kabiru Dakata while giving his remarks at the Storytelling Training of Trainers (TOT) for cluster members and survivors of Sexual Harassment which took place on 23rd and 24th August 2022 in Kano, said "until we have a comprehensive law that is very specific to addressing the issue of rampant sexual harassment in the tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, the problem of sexual harassment will continue to jeopardize the academic activities of students especially females who are mostly the target of the perpetrators."

The group, which is a consortium of seven different Civil Society Organizations from six states conducted the TOT in a way that the participants will go back to their respective states and step down as survivors of sexual harassment.

"We need to build the capacity of survivors of sexual harassment to tell their story, break the culture of silence and become advocacy and public awareness champions on the issue", he added.

On their part, the two resource persons, Dr Rukayya Aliyu from the Mass Communications department of Bayero University, Kano and Aisha Ahmad, a media consultant and journalist, took participants through different topics on storytelling for the two days of the TOT.

Some of the participants interviewed during the training informed AllNews that they feel technically empowered to step down the knowledge learned and continue to advocate against sexual harassment of any form.

The cluster is being supported both technically and financially by the Palladium/SCALE, a USAID-funded project in Nigeria.
