Guardiola Views UCL Glory As Crowning To 'Exceptional' Caree

Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes his legacy at the club is already "exceptional" as they strive to convert their domestic success into European triumph.

The English champions are preparing to face Real Madrid in the crucial second leg of the Champions League semifinal, with the tie finely balanced at 1-1.

Guardiola's men have the opportunity to become only the second team ever to achieve a remarkable treble of the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in a single season if they emerge victorious over the Spanish giants. While they only need one win from their remaining three Premier League matches to secure their fifth title in six seasons under Guardiola, claiming the prestigious European crown has eluded them thus far.

This match against Madrid presents an ideal chance for City to make history, as the winners will be strong favourites to defeat either AC Milan or Inter Milan in the final to be held in Istanbul next month.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Guardiola acknowledged the significance of the upcoming game, stating, "We are not ignorant of how important tomorrow's match is. It's one of the most crucial encounters since we've been together here. We can't deny that, considering the competition and the opponent. I've told the players to approach it as a tremendous opportunity and enjoy the moment."

The City boss emphasized their fortunate position, saying, "How lucky we are. We are incredibly fortunate to be here. It's in our hands; it depends on us. We don't have to do something extraordinary, just be ourselves and win one game to reach the final."

Last season, City's hopes were dashed by a stunning late comeback from Madrid in the semifinals. However, this time around, Guardiola's side holds a vital advantage with the second leg being played at home in the Etihad Stadium. City boasts an impressive record in the Champions League, having remained unbeaten at home for five years and winning all 14 matches on their own turf in 2023.

Guardiola, who clinched the Champions League twice during his tenure at Barcelona, expressed his delight, stating, "To be here is a dream come true. We are in an excellent position as we are in the FA Cup final, one step away from winning the Premier League, and in the semifinals of the Champions League. However, we must perform much better than we did in the Madrid (away) game."

City will face Manchester United, the only team to have accomplished the treble, in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 3rd June.

Despite Guardiola's undeniable influence over the past seven years, City's transformation into a footballing powerhouse began with the arrival of Emirati royal Sheikh Mansour, who took over the club in 2008. The injection of significant financial resources has propelled City to become the dominant force in English football.

Defender Kyle Walker acknowledged the club's indebtedness to its owners and spoke of their determination to secure the coveted Champions League title. Walker said, "The club is missing that one. For the owners, the amount of money they've invested in this club, we owe it to them. We owe it to ourselves as well."

As the tension builds ahead of the second leg against Real Madrid, Guardiola and his players are fully aware that this could be a defining moment in the club's history—a chance to solidify their exceptional legacy and cement their place among the elite of European football.
