Unknown gunmen have killed three police officers in front of a police station along the Enugu-Abakaliki highway in Ebonyi State.
It was learned that the policemen were killed by the gunmen during an attack on a roadblock mounted in front of the station on Monday.
According to reports, the policemen stopped a hummer bus conveying the gunmen, and in turn they opened fire on the officers.
The remains of the three police victims have been deposited at a mortuary in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The spokesperson of the state Police Command, Loveth Odah, confirmed the incident to reporters on Tuesday.
She stated that more details would be released soon after ascertaining the number of casualities.
It is rumnoured that the attack may be linked to the outlawed group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which is leading the agitation for an independent state, Biafra, which they want carved out of the South-east and a part of the South-south regions.
