Hacker Get 2000 Accounts Of Access Bank Customers, Tech Expe

Hackers are reportedly in possession of accounts belonging to about 2000 Access Bank customers. Some of the account details have been posted online by an unknown individual. Access Bank said criminals posted information of their customers, but the bank didn't confirm the validity of the details.

In a video seen by AllNews, a man stated that he hacked Access Bank's system server to obtain customers' personal information to show the vulnerability in Access Bank's internal security. The unknown person said none of the customer information is safe.

According to the man in the video, he could debit the accounts of customers he was able to obtain from Access Bank. AllNews gathered that he got about 2000 customer names and Bank Verification Number (BVN) and phone number.

The hacker called the internal security of Access Bank "Stupid" due to how easy he was able to obtain the information that could enable him debit Access Bank's customers' account, "If someone like me could get hold of customers information like this, from their system, hack into their system, then that should tell you the potential damage." The unknown hacker said.

No Threat To Customers' Money?

Despite the number of information the hack was able to obtain, Access Bank said customers shouldn't be frightened. According to Access Bank, regardless of the BVN, account number, and phone number with the hacker, there's no threat to customers'money.

In a statement released by Access Bank, the company disclosed that "Criminals have posted pages purporting to contain customer account information. We’ve alerted law enforcement agencies and ask that you ignore the post. There is no threat to your account balances. Pls. continue to follow security protocol by never sharing your account details."

Hackers Using Access Bank Data To Hack Other Banks?

While reacting to the hacker's disclosure of obtaining Access Bank customers BVN and other personal information, Tech expert and entrepreneur, Victor Asemota, said he had received a fraudulent call once, but Access Bank was speaking gibberish to him when he contacted their bank.

"When I mentioned that I was called by a 419 guy who wanted me to confirm my BVN details, their social media handle was saying yen yen yen nonsense. See?" Asemota said, referring to the video of the hacker.

According to Asemota, hackers are now using Access Bànk to hack other banks. In separate tweets, Asemota said, "They are now using Access Bank data to hack other banks... Security is about the weakest link in the chain of custody. If one party is careless, everyone is at risk." he tweeted.

He added that "This bank should see this as a moment to learn lessons and not make threats. 419 people called me claiming to be Access Bank customer care and I shared it here but it was brushed aside. This was carelessness on the bank's part. They should fire their entire tech team." Asemota said.

Another tech expert and CEO of Get Appruve, a financial data API, Paul Damalie, said, "This is really common. Fraudsters harvest genuine data from multiple sources and attempt to access bank accounts by social engineering. That is why checking for ID in the database alone is not enough."
