Hakimi Divorce Saga: Thinking Smart Or Being Wily?

Hakimi Divorce Saga: Thinking Smart Or Being Wily?

The news of the divorce case between Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi and his wife Hiba Abouk has apparently set tongues wagging.

On all social media platforms, there are many commentators on the issue, all expressing their hot takes about the move taken by Hakimi in the dissolution of his marriage with Abouk.

The opinions are expectedly divergent as some argue that the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender was smart in handling the divorce case while others say he was wily as a fox.

What actually transpired in court was that Abouk filed for divorce over allegations of infidelity and prayed the court to split Hakimi’s fortunes into two as her alimony in the divorce settlement.

Unfortunately for her, it was discovered that the 24-year-old player, who receives more than a million euros per month as one of the highest paid players in Ligue 1, had no fortune to his name.

All Hakimi's houses, cars, clothes and jewelry she assumed belonged to him were found to be in his mother’s name, Sadia Mouth, including the millions in salary deposited in accounts bearing his mother’s name.

The discovery during the proceedings in court ensured that Abouk received no settlement despite that the couple began dating in 2018, married in 2020 and have two sons.

It is of some concern that Abouk who spent and sacrificed two years of her life with Hakimi had to leave without a dime.

This is because the law in almost all the countries around the world doesn't support such as alimony or the divorce spouse maintenance is a requirement in cases pertaining to divorce.

Although divorce may end a marriage, it is expected that the commitments and obligations of marriage are to be shouldered by both the spouses, regardless of their gender, for the rest of their lives even if there is mental disparity or physical separation.

The purposes of awarding spousal support or alimony are: to provide for the needs of the wives after divorce, to assist wives to achieve self-sufficiency and to help out the wives to attain the capability of earning a livelihood which can enable them a standard of living equivalent to that enjoyed during the marriage.

However, it is understood that due to the phobia of losing half of all the assets one worked hard to acquire, Hakimi thought it wise and best to register 80 per cent of all that he owns in his mother’s name.

The cases of sportsmen who have been rendered broke after a bitter divorce battle triggers this phobia that in turn awakens one's consciousness to jealously guard his fortunes from his partner.

A gut-wrenching case in point is the ordeal of former Arsenal star Emmanuelle Eboue in the hands of his Belgium wife Aurelie who stripped him of all of his assets.

She reportedly took up to £7m of his hard earned money as a professional footballer along with his mansion in Enfield, United Kingdom.

This resorted to the riches-to-rags story of the Ivorian who contemplated suicide after spending his post-football life dodging bailiffs, sleeping on the floor of a friend’s home and washing clothes by hand.

“I can’t afford the money to continue to have any lawyer or barrister," Eboue lamented.

"I am in the house but I am scared. Because I don’t know what time the police will come.

"Sometimes I shut off the lights because I don’t want people to know that I am inside. I put everything behind the door.

"My own house. I suffered to buy my house but I am now scared.

"I am not going to sell my clothes or sell what I have.

"I will fight until the end because it is not fair.”

With the lessons learnt from the tragic story of Eboue after his acrimonious divorce, it becomes safe to say that Hakimi's decision to not register any of his assets in his name is well justified, considering that we live in times where people take marital vows majorly because of material gains.

This indeed makes it consequential that a footballer who intends to tie the knot must think smart and act smart because divorce doesn't just end a marriage but is also capable of ruining one's illustrious career by rendering one penniless.
