Half Salaries: ASUU NEC Meeting Ends, Union Speaks

Half Salaries: ASUU NEC Meeting Ends, Union Speaks

The meeting by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) following the payment of half salaries to lecturers has ended.

The meeting which took place on Monday at the University of Abuja continued till late at night, and it was resolved that the union would not embark on another strike.

According to a source, the union has decided to wait for the result of the intervention of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila in the rift between the ASUU and the Federal Government due to the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement by the government.

Although no prominent member of the union's NEC who attended the meeting has spoken on its outcome, a source revealed that the union decided not to embark on another strike to communicate their grievances to the government.

According to the source, while some of the members suggested the declaration of a total and comprehensive strike across public universities in Nigeria, many others decided otherwise, noting that it was not required for the present situation.

The members who kicked against the strike option opined that it would be wrong to force the students who recently resumed school to go back home.

The statement by Gbajabilamila that the government would, as expected, not pay the lecturers their full salary further humiliated the argument by those who considered strike as the last option.

Others said it would be wrong for the union to go on strike while the Speaker, who facilitates the end of the eight-month strike was still working on ensuring the federal government reconsiders the 'no-work, no-pay' policy.

The source said, "embarking on another round of strike was not considered an option in resolving the current issues with the federal government at the meeting."

He noted, "You would hear the rest through the appropriate channel" when asked what exactly transpired at the meeting.

“As a body, we have people that speak for us. You will hear from them on what really happened”, the source also said.
