Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, despite clinching the prestigious ‘Best Female Artiste of the Year’ award at the recently held Headies Awards, has expressed her disappointment and lack of gratitude for the accolade.

According to her, the organisers failed to acknowledge the award on the event’s main stage.

The 16th edition of the Headies Awards took place at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, USA, on Sunday.

Notably, no female award categories were presented during the event, which ended abruptly around 2:30 a.m. Nigerian time.

The categories left unannounced include ‘Best Female Artiste’, ‘Best Recording of The Year’, ‘Songwriter of the Year’, ‘Best RnB Single’, ‘Best Vocal Performance (Female)’, ‘Headies Viewers’ Choice’, ‘Best East African Artiste of the Year’, ‘Best North African Artiste of The Year, ‘Best Southern African Artiste of The Year’, ‘Best Central African Artiste of The Year’, ‘International Artiste Of The Year’, ‘Best Alternative Album’, and ‘Best RnB Album’.

Although the event’s organisers did not provide an official reason for the sudden closure of the ceremony, they later disclosed the unannounced award winners via social media.

Weighing in on this, Ayra Starr stated that she and her female colleagues didn’t deserve such nonchalance as they expect more respect and recognition for their contributions to the music industry.

The ‘Bloody Samaritan’ singer then acknowledges the hard work put in by herself and her fellow female artists, mentioning Tiwa Savage recording four hit songs in one night and Tems’ dedication to music.

“I will never be grateful for winning a category that wasn’t even deemed fit to be announced on stage! Best female artist na beans?

“We work hard, every single one of us! I’ve seen Tiwa record 4 hit songs in the same night, Tems breathes and lives for music, we didn’t deserve such nonchalance! Nigeria, you didn’t raise me to settle for less,” she tweeted.
