"Health-Related" Nudity Now Allowed On Instagram

Health-Related Nudity Now Allowed On Instagram

Based on recommendations from its newly set-up and independent Oversight Board, Facebook has agreed to make a few changes to some of its policies, including its Instagram nudity policy.

Facebook agreed to the Oversight Board's recommendation that Facebook updates Instagram’s community guidelines around adult nudity to clarify that some nudity — if it is health-related, photos of breastfeeding, giving birth, breast cancer awareness, gender confirmation surgery, or in an act of protest — be allowed on the platform.

Nick Clegg, Facebook’s VP of global affairs, wrote in a company blog post, “When we created the Oversight Board, we hoped its impact would come not just from its decisions on individual cases, but also from broader recommendations on how we can improve our policies and practices. This is the start of that process. The board deals with some of the trickiest content moderation issues Facebook faces, where there are often no easy decisions. We want this process to be as open and transparent as possible, which is why we are responding to every one of their recommendations in detail.”

Some of the other areas where Facebook says it is “committed to action” appear to be largely commitments to transparency. Facebook said it would clarify its community standards to include how it treats COVID-19 misinformation that could cause immediate physical harm and how it handles humor, satire, and personal experiences. Facebook is also launching a transparency center to help users better understand the platform’s community standards.
