Heavy Snow, Crash Involving Six Trailers Causes Road Blockag

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed roads were shut down on Monday around the Virginia city of Fredericksburg due to heavy snow and a crash involving six trailers.

The VDOT stated in their statement on Twitter that: “Our crews are actively working to get everyone off the road. Plans are underway to guide vehicles currently stopped on the interstate to nearby interchanges, where they can access alternate routes."

The VDOT also added that traffic cameras went offline as central Virginia also lost power with more than 281,000 people without electricity due to the heavy snow.

It was gathered that the tractor-trailer collision caused no injuries, but brought traffic along the main U.S. East Coast highway.

Hundreds of motorists were stranded for hours and stuck with no fuel, food or water. Aljazeera claimed more than 30cm of snow accumulated in areas around the traffic.

According to the National Weather Service, thousands of accidents and stranded vehicles were reported throughout central and northern Virginia.

Among those trapped was U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, who tweeted that he was among those trapped in the road blockage for 19 hours.

The Free Lance-Star newspaper in Fredericksburg reported that the Virginia State Police responded to more than 2,000 distress calls for service due to the incident.
