HIRD Initiative To Bring Health Care Closer To Rural Dwellers - Osun NYSC Coordinator

HIRD Initiative To Bring Health Care Closer To Rural Dweller

The Osun State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Winifred Shokpeka, has revealed that the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) is a medical outreach that takes health care to the rural dwellers and it is aimed at making the NYSC more impactful to the people at the rural communities.

The Osun NYSC State Coordinator who maintained that the initiative created an avenue for memories to be made explained that with the concentration of medical facilities in the cities and towns, rural dwellers were considered as it is widely observed that most of them are left to the mercy of patent medicine dealers.

"You can be sure that many of these people here today have never checked their blood pressure before or know anything about the blood sugar level in their bodies.

"They are not the only ones here, they have children in other places and they will take the information about what NYSC is doing to them and the treatment they obtained from the corps.

"It is not a one-off thing. The children too step up and begin to take care of the health of their parents.

"You can be sure that many of them here know that we are doing all that now and we are guided in medications and from there they take it up", she stated.

Responding to questions from journalists, the Chairman of Apomu local government council, Moroof Akinremi noted that it was an opportunity for people who do not have money for medical bills in the hospitals to come and get health checks for free.

The Head of the NYSC medical team, Dr. Ibe Chidinma while stressing the importance of medical checks for the aged noted that as the body ages, some diseases peculiar with age start to rear their heads.

"There is need for constant medical checkup and this comes in form of annual medical checks since most diseases are discovered by chance.

"It is better for any disease to be discovered now before it progresses."

Ibe said that the purpose of the health initiative programme is to create awareness that there are corps members who are ready to tender to the health of the people.

"Some people are scared of going to the hospital and we have come to them  and show that we are here to help."
