HIV/AIDS: Group Commends Religious Leaders For Stand Against

Ikenna Nwakanma, the Programme Officer, Nigerian Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV/AIDS (NINERELA+), has commended some religious leaders over their position against stigmatisation of Persons Living with HIV (PLHIV).

Nwakanma made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, such religious leaders play transformational roles in addressing the narratives of stigma and discrimination against PLHIV.

“We have seen the reverse through the work done with faith leaders.

“In these cases, they play more transformational roles by changing the narratives through their preaching.”

He disclosed that the clerics usually address the issue of stigma in their communities by providing the right information to PLHIV.

According to him, they have been able to assure PLHIV that the Antiretroviral Drug (ARV) is a miracle on its own.

He explained that such sermon and assurance had given PLHIV mental and spiritual strength to continue in care.

He said the attitude and actions of such religious leaders shows they are agents of change.

He expressed optimism that there would be more achievements with the active participation of religious leaders in addressing the challenges of stigma, faith healing and poor health behavioural pattern of PLHIV.
