How lack of confidence, mistakes culminated in defeat to Arsenal — Erik ten Hag

How lack of confidence, mistakes culminated in defeat to Ars

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag seems never to have enough of the chance to defend his team that has lost in two consecutive games after the latest setback against as his team bowed to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford Sunday evening.

United were smarting from the 4-0 drubbing on Monday against Crystal Palace on Monday but rather than being confident as Arsenal have not won at the home of the Red Devils more than twice in 16 previous meetings, the injury woes to the United team was cause for concern.

United were missing key players like Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martines and Luke Shaw.

These were Erik ten Hag's words at his post-match press conference as he answered questions on his makeshift defence: "We've talked all season about this. To have a backline who play together regularly and have routines is obviously better.

"You need players who have confidence to play there, we have players playing in positions who are not used to them and then you make mistakes. At a high level, you are punished. Or you have to play players who are not fit. That's the situation we are in."

The United manager speaking on whether there were more positives to take than from Monday's defeat at Crystal Palace: "Yes, but it's still disappointing. I want to win, it doesn't matter who we face on the pitch. We have to win every game and give everything.

On Casemiro's mistake which led to the goal, the Dutchman said: "It's small detail, one layer makes a mistake and it opens up. Before that in possession, we could have done better in better positions and better options. It's details."

United are three points adrift of Newcastle United and they face the Toons on Wednesday night.
