How military troops fought following ambush in Niger State

General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander Operation Whirl Punch, Maj Gen Landers Saraso has given insight on how troops of  1 Division Nigerian Army deployed at Allawa and Erena, while on a fighting patrol to Karaga Village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State had an encounter in an ambush staged by terrorists on 19 April 2024.

General Landers gave details of how the troops gallantly fought through the ambush and eliminated several of the terrorists as well as captured some of their equipment.

However, the General revealed that the soldiers suffered a temporary setback as six personnel comprising two officers and four soldiers paid the supreme price as they fought their way through the ambush.

While giving the details of the tragic incident, Maj Gen Landers Saraso, on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, expressed sympathy for the families of the slain servicemen and assured them that the forces would revenge the sad setback.

He stated that the military is actively tracking some of the terrorists who survived and escaped following the confrontation.

He advised the people of the state to carry out their normal and lawful activities, assuring them that the Nigerian Army and other security services would safeguard them at all times.

Meanwhile, per customs and traditions, the Nigerian Army administration contacted the Next of Kins of the fallen heroes, and burial was performed for the slain Muslim servicemen with the cooperation and approval of their family members.

Maj Gen Kelvin Aligbe, Commander Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), represented the Chief of Army Staff at the burial in Minna Military Cantonment Cemetery.

The Deputy Governor, a representative of the COAS, GOC, and other senior officials made condolence visits to the relatives of the deceased after visiting the two wounded troops getting medical treatment at the Military Hospital.

The army nonetheless, encouraged the general public, particularly the good people of Niger and neighbouring states, to continue providing the Nigerian Army and other security agencies with actionable and timely intelligence to help the troops do their duties.
